Students are introduced to the knowledge, basic skills, attitudes, and concepts in nursing practice and include the nursing process, critical thinking, effective communication, quality and safety, legal and ethical principles, social determinants of health, informatics, evidence-based practice, National Patient Safety Goals, client education, culture, and self-care. Beginning competencies in medication administration, aseptic technique, medical terminology, and strategies for client adaptation in basic care and comfort, nutrition and elimination, oxygenation, mobility, hygiene, skin integrity, and psychosocial integrity are assessed in this course.

This course will focus on the data collection, problem identification, and planning phases of the nursing process across the four spheres of care. The practice of therapeutic communication, compassionate care, and respect for diversity will be emphasized. Students will begin to develop an understanding of healthcare informatics and its relationship to the electronic health records (EHR) for documentation and communication of findings.

This course explores pathophysiology concepts in a focused, understandable approach for nursing students. Pathophysiology will be studied from a systems perspective, including common or prevalent conditions that occur when abnormal pathophysiology is present. In addition to pathophysiology, students will learn common clinical manifestations, risk factors, etiologies, diagnostic testing, and treatment for the conditions presented. Emphasis is placed on the relationship between altered physiology and clinical manifestations, diagnostic findings, and nursing interventions across the four spheres of care. By integrating case studies and other active learning approaches, students will enhance their critical thinking and clinical decision-making skills to provide evidence-based patient care.

The terms, concepts, and principles of pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics are applied to clients requiring adaptation to disease processes. Medication indications, therapeutic, adverse, and toxic effects on human health are emphasized throughout the course. Legal, ethical, and safety aspects of pharmacology are presented with a focus on the administration of medications.

Emphasis is on the importance of theory, evidence-based practice, accountability.

The course focuses on public health, emergency preparedness and disaster management, epidemiology, informatics, healthcare economics, and the social determinants of health. The Roy Model, the nursing process, critical thinking, clinical judgment, evidence-based practice, quality and safety, ethics, interprofessional collaboration, palliative and end of life care, are applied. The following concepts, forces and stressors that affect population health are assessed, analyzed, and integrated throughout the course; these include health systems, health inequity, systemic bias/racism, environmental health, ethics, and advocacy.

Students will apply theory to practice utilizing the nursing process, critical thinking, clinical judgment, healthcare technology, and quality and safety in the provision of compassionate care for the acutely ill client.

The focus of this capstone course is to synthesize leadership, political, economic, legal, ethical, global, and technological issues confronting professional nursing practice. Students will demonstrate and expand competencies in the knowledge, skills, and attitudes achieved in previous courses essential for transition to professional practice. The exploration health care systems, both nationally and internationally, will enhance the understanding of contemporary issues and trends in a global society. Career planning will encourage the student to recognize the value of civility, resilience, self-care, professional development, and life-long learning.
